You may have noticed that it’s been a minute since I’ve written something or shared my new beauty obsessions—almost a year in fact. And just what has been keeping me so busy?
A slightly different look for my vanity
A new job that began last February and OH YEAH I HAD A BABY! My little monkey is 9 weeks old now and my go-to response to the inevitable but innocuous “So how is motherhood?” line of questioning can be summed up in one word: INTENSE. All the euphoria and anxiety and joy and pains (physical, emotional and psychological) are turned up to 11 and coupled with the least sleep I’ve ever had in my life, it all makes for an adventure that, I’m sure like so many women before me, is impossible to truly be prepared for, anticipate or adequately describe. It’s a trip.
The flower that’s synonymous with Valentine’s Day—and, for better or worse, The Bachelor—is having a moment as a key ingredient and a colour muse. Throughout its long existence, the rose has been separated into its parts and liquefied, made into essential oil and otherwise processed and distilled for a wide array of benefits, from anti-inflammation to anti-aging, hydration and skin repair. But while the rose’s role as a power player on your beauty shelf is nothing new, the ways that some brands are tipping their hats to the hard-working flower is. Yes genetics, environment, diet and lifestyle all play a part in how the aging process will hit you—gently, like a summer’s breeze or punishing like a tropical storm—but most people who have the time, money and inclination have smartened up with a skincare regimen that does some (okay A LOT) of the work for them.

I’ve lost count of the numbers of new beauty items I’ve tested and tried over the last year (mostly for work but sometimes for fun)—creams and serums, blushes and bronzers, mascaras, brow pencils and pomades, lipsticks and stains, oil-based everything and a few new brushes and tools to apply said products.
But not every item that starting popping up on shelves as far back as January is worthy of being singled out. The six gems I’ve chosen weren’t even part of my beauty routine Some nine months ago and now I can’t imagine going without them. Cue the applause.
Where I’d usually grab a deep burgundy, a classic red or an aubergine come December, now I’m all about the neutral nail.

Contouring’s death knell may have rung last summer when makeup kween Kim K threw her support behind nontouring, but the trend isn’t quite done with us yet. Instead, it’s become focused, refined and, most importantly, simplified.
It’s no secret that wide-open eyes = awake-looking eyes, and eye contouring takes the same shadow and highlighting play that can change the look and shape of your face (see above image) and brings it to your peepers, with no complicated tutorial required.
