This season, New York Fashion Week kicked off in a surprisingly sensational, self-deprecating manner with the world’s biggest fictional male model making his victory lap 15 years after he first confidently walked into our lives.
Ben Stiller is reprising his role as dim-witted and dashing Derek Zoolander for the much-anticipated sequel Zoolander 2, with Owen Wilson as fellow clueless hunk Hansel, Will Ferrell as the villainous Mugatu and newbies Kristen Wiig and Penelope Cruz as…other characters.
Instead of a staid red carpet premiere, the Zoolander 2 crew opted for a splashy, can’t-miss return and the publicity machine for the sequel, currently sitting at a 33% (un)fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has been working overtime. We’re talking a surprise pop-in at the Valentino show last March, this month’s Vogue cover for Ben and Penelope, a hilarious edition of 73 Questions, Instagram walk-offs with Cara Delevingne and now a runway show with probably the world’s most sought-after non-Kardashian Millennial tastemaker and model, Gigi Hadid.
And keeping everyone looking really, really ridiculously good-looking backstage was none other than beauty godmother Charlotte Tilbury, chosen by Anna Wintour herself, who used best-sellers like Magic Cream, Full Fat Lashes Mascara and Wonderglow from her hugely popular Charlotte Tilbury makeup and skincare line on all the models, which included bold named like Fei Fei Sun, Irina Shayk and Stella Maxwell, who wore Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang and Valentino.
But it was easily Gigi’s night, who stunned in a floor-length embellished Marc Jacobs single-strap gown, swirly updo and an indigo smokey eye and nude lip, created by Charlotte, that I’m dying to try and recreate. (I’m not expecting to make quite the same impact.)
Hadid’s head-to-toe look was bold, youthful and impossible to ignore – I especially like that she threw up the horns when she lead the models down the runway – and I think it’s one of the best looks the 20-year-old beauty has rocked in recent memory…at least with her clothes on.
